Squad Busters bursts onto iOS and Android with big multiplayer action
Whether or not you’ve heard of the mobile game developer Supercell, you almost certainly know some of the games in its portfolio. Generating $1.84 billion in revenue last year, the group owns massive hits like Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, and Brawl Stars. Last week, their newest IP landed on mobile, and it’s loaded with plenty of multiplayer action. This is a quick look at Squad Busters for Android and iOS.
Squad Busters is a PvP/PvE hybrid game where players must fight increasingly difficult enemies, build a team of warriors, and collect the most gems across the map to win. While you can fight directly with real-player opponents in an attempt to knock out their teams, you will also compete against them in a race to earn the most gems per round.
Each match takes place over the course of four minutes on a randomly chosen map and game mode. You start every match with one character. Walk up to nearby enemies and defeat them so that they drop coins. Then use these coins to open up chests that let you add more fighters to your team in real time. The longer the match goes on, the more fighters you’ll bring in, and the harder the enemies will become as they spill more coins and gems.
After each match, you’ll get the chance to spend a limited number of tickets to unlock new characters and upgrades. For Supercell fans, the characters in Squad Busters will look familiar, since all of them come from existing titles, including Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars, Hay Day, Clash Royale, and Boom Beach.
There’s no controller support, but it really isn’t necessary here as the touchscreen controls are pretty straight forward. Simply use the virtual joystick to approach enemies and stand there to let your characters automatically wallop them into oblivion. Hit the dash button to expedite your movements across the map. There are also occasional special attacks you can use to heal your team or unleash devastating abilities on your enemies. That’s about it.
Squad Busters is available now on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It’s completely free to download and play. There are in-app purchases, should you choose to open your wallet to grab some extra characters or coins.
